Let’s talk bulb flowers
Over the next few weeks is the ideal time to plant flower bulbs. Depending on the variety you might need to do it this weekend or you might need to wait two or three weekends. The great thing about flower bulbs is they are perennial which means they come back year after year. a lot of them can even be dug up this time of year and you can split the bulbs and replant them meaning you can start with a few and over the years have more and more and more. In my opinion some of our prettiest nicest looking flowers come from bulbs. Bulbs can be had in wide varieties of flowers in any store that sells that type of product and normally you can buy larger bags fairly cheap.
You do want to pay close attention when picking out your bulbs. Think of flower bulbs like. After all that is actually what an onion is. So you want to find bulbs that are firm nice looking kind of like what you would want to buy onion to cook with. If they are soft and mushy or have discolored spots on them just don’t look attractive passed them up and get another bag. Most bulbs need to be planted just a few inches deep and they actually need to be planted the right direction. There is a top in the bottom and it will actually tell you on the package which direction to plant the bulb.
Most flowers that come from bulbs do not flower all year long. They will have a season so it is best to mix different types together that mature and flower at different times of the year if you want all your long color.
